Women have been fully involved in Buddhism from the very beginning of the Sangha community as ordained monastic practicers, lay sponsors, and lay supporters.

Yet the history of the participation of women in Buddhism has also been one of cultural and doctrinal gender bias. Women’s voices expressing their unique experiences, views, understanding, and perspectives are rare, as it was mostly men who articulated and chronicled Buddhist doctrine and history.

For this event we welcome two speakers, Rev. Yuika Hasebe and Rev. Mieko Majima, ordained ministers of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii, who will share their experience, knowledge, and insight into Buddhism’s past and present–as well as their understanding of the Shin Buddhist Path–from their perspectives as women.

The program will provide an historical survey of women in Buddhism, focusing on the lives of important women practicers from the earliest times, through Eshin-ni and Kakushin-ni, up to the modern era including the formation of the Buddhist Women’s Association), and the importance of women as Buddhist role models in the home.

Our journey will emphasize the ways the Pure Land teachings, especially the Shin Buddhist Path taught by Shinran Shonin, helped to overcome and transcend all types of biases, especially those against women.
