As the most important Jodo Shinshu observance, this is the date chosen to commemorate Shinran Shonin’s passing.

Practicers have a chance to “hear the light” through listening to sermons, talks, ritual, and sangha fellowship at services and other observances on or near this date.

This year, Hoonko falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which each year is also a holiday for Headquarters staff. On this day, students and staff of Pacific Buddhist Academy, members of the Buddhist Women’s Association, and other sangha members typically participate in MLK events and activities.
