This page was created to provide updates on Hongwanji Hawaii cancellations and closures due to Tropical Storm / Hurricane Lala as we learned of them.

• Headquarters / Bishop’s Office: Internet and phones are out as of Monday, 8/17 at 10:30 a.m. Office will reopen when Internet is restored (possibly not until Tuesday).
• Kamuela Hongwanji Bon Dance: Kamuela Hongwanji has postponed their Bon Service and Bon Dance (originally scheduled for 8/15) to Saturday, August 29, 2026. On that day, the service will be at 6 p.m. and the Bon Dance at 7 p.m. [source]
• Wahiawa Hongwanji: Sunday service on August 16, 2026, is canceled. [source]
• Puna Hongwanji: In person Sunday service on August 16, 2026, is canceled. Power permitting, Zoom will still be available. Email mpunahongwanji@twc.com for the Zoom link. [source]
• Mo’ili’ili Hongwanji: Services at Moiliili Hongwanji Mission are canceled for Sunday, August 16. [source]
• Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin: The combined Hatsubon service originally scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, has been postponed to September (date to be determined). Sunday services for August 16, 2026, are canceled. Hawaii Betsuin leadership made the decision after assessing Saturday impacts and intermittent power glitches. [source]
• Lihue Hongwanji: August 16 services canceled. Appreciation party postponed until August 23.
• The Hilo Betsuin office and columbarium will be closed Saturday, August 15.
• Wailuku Hongwanji: Service and activity on August 16, 2026, are canceled.

Rev. Alan Urasaki also let us know that Shinshu Kyokai Mission in Honolulu (independent) has canceled service on Sunday, August 16.
